SUNDAY

SEPTEMBER 2, 2012

 At this very moment I’m sitting on the back of a Harley, which could very well be stolen, setting off into the sunset with an amazing guy. His strong muscular form is driving and the vibrations of the motor send shivers through our bodies.

I recall the past few years I’d spent with my ex-boyfriend, Marc. I close my eyes and rest my chin on this man’s back. It’s easy to remember the heartache and the pain of loneliness. I can still sense the tears I shed for Marc. My ex never cared for me the way I loved him. I was in love with Marc for years; he played my family and me for fools. Marc stole my heart and stomped on it the day I
found him in bed with my best friend Natalie. That day I lost Marc and I lost a huge part of me as well. I told myself I wouldn’t give my heart to another man again.

The wind ripping through us feels cool against my body and it’s tangling through my thick, wavy, brown hair. I scan my eyes looking down along his powerfully built chest and see my arms wrapped around his waist for fear that I may fall. The mere thought of falling in love scared me for too long.

My eyes move over his broad left shoulder and I catch a glimpse of my reflection in the side mirror. The twinkle in my big-brown eyes and the smile across my face bring out an emotion as if I’m a little girl just waking up Christmas morning.

I have a sense of freedom that I haven't experienced in a long time. I never imagined emotions this strong would consume me again.

The past few weeks are nothing I ever imagined. This man in front of me is the one who allows me to be me. He loves me for the person I am, not the woman he wants me to be.

Ill start by saying i love this story !!! Char and Riley are definately a touch your heart meant to be kind of couple ! And who doesnt love a sweet sexy construction worker lol ! Their connection was amazing ! I also love how they helped each other thru their hang ups although it wasnt easy ! I love books that tell both characters pov it gives you a better understanding ! Definately a must read !

This story of two people finding love not just sexual chemistry. Char and Riley find the piece that is missing in they lives. There are many places within this book as the reader you just cheer for them. They are able to get thur everything with each other,trust in their connection. A great read without major drama. I am ready for book two NOW. Thank you for a great story.

Characters- Amazing, witty, well-rounded, and intelligent. Thouroughly enjoyable.
Plot/Storyline- Story was beautiful, tragic, sad, happy, and weaved perfectly.
Steam Factor- No real steam factor, they are only 16 & 17 years old, but there is undeniable love.
Cover- Artsy but I love that the characters were left to your imagination with this cover.
Cliffhanger- No. This is a standalone, but there are still questions I had.
Overall- Geesh, can I say beautiful anymore? I fell in love with this story and had my heart torn apart with the characters. Kleenex is a must for this read, but it's such a wonderfully tragic story.

Oh my!! Where do I start?  This story was as heartbreaking as it was beautiful!! We are introduced to Hazel who has a terminal cancer but has been given a longer life due to a (fictional) wonder drug that has prevented her cancer from growing.  She faces the struggles making decisions in order to please her parents because she hates that she is going to break their hearts in the end with her death.  

Hazel is an introvert and prefers reading to going out and socializing, but her mom wants her to get out and have a life, at least live the life she has left.  Her consession was to go to the Kids with Cancer meetings every Wednesday at a church, but little did she know that she would find the love of her life there. 

We are introduced to Augustus Waters, a cancer survivor who is at the meeting to support his friend Isaac who is going to have to have a life changing surgery to be rid of his cancer.  Augustus can relate, in a surgical manner, to Isaac because Augustus had to have his leg amputated in order to be in remission from his cancer.  He had osteosarcoma. 

Augustus is such a bright light in the dark world of dying and he brings this light into the lives of Isaac and Hazel.  It doesn't hurt that Augustus is gorgeous to boot.  He is such a great character that is very supporting, loving, understanding, sacrificing, and just a beautiful soul.  

Hazel tries to prevent a relationship with Augustus because she wants to prevent further collateral damage when she finally has to say her goodbyes, but Augustus doesn't give up on her. "You realize that trying to keep your distance from me will not lessen my affection for you." (Augustus to Hazel).

 As Hazel gets closer to Augustus, she begins to open up and share her favorite things; one being her favorite book, An Imperial Affliction, that is a story by a girl who is also dying.  Augustus reads this book and they begin to bond over it and take a journey that will forever change their lives. 

The characters in this book are so intelligent, witty, mature, beautiful, and wise beyond their years due to the reality that they have to face everyday; death.  The fact that they know that they have or had cancer has made them look at life differently, live life differently, and approach life differently.  I know that some people complain that the characters are too mature for their age, but I can honestly see how these kids have had to grow up quickly and have been exposed to situations that have forced growing up on them.  They grow up contemplating life and what it means and what comes after it. They grow up knowing that they may not have a first kiss, first love, marriage, babies, grandbabies, etc.  It's a sad reality for many children with cancer and this book is such a beautiful look into what that battle entails; including the disease, the health problems, the friendship amongst fellow cancer peers, and the emotional hardships along the way.

I highly recommend this book, but I will not promise a happy ending because it is a sad ending. But I will promise you a beautiful read that will take up shelter in your heart, make you cry tears of sadness, and will make you look at the world differently and appreciate these beautiful people that fight the battle for life everyday. It will also make you appreciate the life you have.

Characters- Incredibly realistic, sensitive, funny and amazing characters. You will easily connect
Plot/Storyline- Beautiful and tragic story, but definitely inspires you and gives you as the reader hope.
Steam Factor- No real steam factor here, but it doesn't even matter because the story is phenomenal.
Cover- Simple and too the point.
Cliffhanger- No. This is a standalone.
Overall- This story seriously is so captivating in every way. You will laugh, cry and connect fully to this story and the characters.


I have to admit that even though I wanted to read this book, I was a little scared. I was already expecting the worst by reading what the book was about and knowing Cancer is involved. I was hoping and praying that it wouldn't end in devestation, but I was so curious as to what happens that I had to read the story. 

Let me tell me you, 5 beautiful stars for this masterpiece by John Green!! I enjoyed this book so much even though it made me cry :( but the story and characters were written so well. At the end of the book, I felt like I knew the characters and what they went through. At times, the writing is rather overwhelming because Hazel and Augustus are intelligent, witty individuals that had to grow up rather quickly due to their health. The topics they discuss are way over my head! Lol but it's hilarious. Many reviews said they didn't like the characters because of how intellectually they spoke for their age, but in reality Hazel and Gus had to grow up much faster then other teens due to cancer so you can see how they would be the way they are. I loved them! The overall message of the story is captivating and touching in so many ways and I feel that the author really portrays life, death, illness and coping with those things appropriately. I just fell in love with Hazel and Gus and their strength. I highly recommend this book!! :)

Teaser

I was nervous as hell, but I had to focus. I had to think about what I was going to say. This was a make it or break it situation. If I said or did anything wrong, I was going to lose Gage.


We met at the door and as soon as it was opened for us, the music blared. Girls were screaming, guys were yelling like hooligans. It was wild. The lights were dim, mist was flowing out of a few vents above the crowd, most likely to keep them cool. It didn’t seem to be working, though, because as we stepped in, the atmosphere was thick and hot. I felt the sweat coming and I hadn’t even been in the stadium for longer than a minute.


“Our spots are up there!” I shouted at Kelsey who was staring at the stage in awe. Her eyes were wide and I looked with her, wondering what had her attention.


Without a doubt it was the band. Montana had on a ripped white shirt, his mohawk was spikey, a handsomely wicked smile on his lips. He was strapping his guitar around him, winking at a few chicks, and as soon as his guitar was around him, he raised his hands in the air and the crowd went wild for him.


“I fucking love you, Montana Delray!” a girl beside us screamed. She could have busted my eardrum by how loud she was.


I looked at Kelsey, knowing she wasn’t going to move anytime soon. I grabbed her arm and pushed through the thick crowd. This was new. Really new. I was always a backstage fan so I didn’t have to worry about getting through the mass, but it was terrible. Sweat from others was spilling on me. Girls wouldn’t get the hell out of my way. And the guys were worse. They were like a group of football players getting ready for their final game. Nothing could stop them. Nothing could get through them. They were like brick walls.


Somehow I managed to get through, though. My hand was still wrapped around Kelsey’s wrist and as soon as I reached the front row, Gage’s hypnotic voice bellowed through the mic and the girls screamed like monkeys. “Y’all are amazing tonight!” he said, chuckling. “Seriously. This love I’m feeling from y’all is incredible.”


The girls screamed even louder, some bumping into us. I pushed through the front to get a better spot and as soon as I stopped, I looked up. I released Kelsey, who was staring at Roy. Roy was staring right back.


And then I looked at Gage. He was always so damn handsome. Always. His hair was a bit longer, messy, and his facial hair was trimmed to a tee. He wore a black T-shirt with FireNine spray-painted on it, dark blue jeans, and as usual, Chuck Taylor shoes. He pushed his hair out of his face as he spoke in the mic again, and hearing him like this—watching him like this—was amazing. Now I could see why the girls in the crowd were so wild about him. He was standing above me, like some sort of king on a throne. He had flirtatious eyes, a smooth and deep voice that filled me up. I wanted to just grab him off that stage and attack him with kisses. I wanted to ride him for hours.


From this angle, the name Rockgod Grendel finally made sense to me now.


Gage said something else and then he aligned his fingers on his guitar. He started off the show by singing solo. The band wasn’t playing yet. It was just his voice filling the stadium, making the girls crazier. His voice was hypnotic and he was really singing… like, really, really singing. From the depths of his soul. His heart. This was love to him. He enjoyed it. He was giving it his all and he had his reasons. I remembered him telling me how singing made him disappear—how it made him feel like there were no worries. No problems. Singing was his escape, his happy place.


And then he opened his eyes wide and clamped his mouth shut, giving a slight interlude. He finally strummed his guitar and the band went in on their instruments. The music blared through the stadium and Kelsey screamed beside me, admiring the performance. She was bouncing up and down, cheering, hollering, reaching forward to try and get a feel of Roy. It was odd seeing him get so close to the edge of the stage. This wasn’t like him. He always kept his distance, but as he stole glances at Kelsey, I realized he was dedicating this performance to her… and he was doing one hell of a job.


Gage’s voice got lower, more powerful and I looked at him. As soon as I did, a gasp escaped me. He was staring right at me. He was still playing, still singing, but his eyes were fixed on me. Watching me. Taking all of me in. I bit my bottom lip and he shook his head, most likely wondering why the hell I was here, in the crowd of all places. He wasn’t expecting me, and he couldn’t keep his eyes off me. His voice wavered a bit on one part, almost crackling. The lyrics were about missing someone. Loving someone. The lyrics literally brought tears to my eyes.





She was all I had and I blew it


The one I cried for, she knew it


I would fight for the rest of my life


Just to keep her by my side


She was my one…





Damn. The lyrics were beautiful. And as he sang each word, he looked straight into my eyes. I think I saw tears forming in his but before I could make them out, he blinked hard and looked away. And he didn’t look at me after he tore his gaze away. Not even as the songs changed. He avoided my eyes, and this proved he was nothing but hurt and confused.

Eliza Smith has never been the one to seek a relationship. She’s never dated a guy in her life, never even hugged a man (outside of her father/manager of the hot and popular rock band, FireNine) but when she decides to spend her summer on tour with FireNine, it all changes. Eliza really gets to meet Gage Grendel - her former crush from high school and the lead singer of FireNine - and witness sides to him to which she’ll begin to truly despise.
She’ll ignore him, she’ll dislike his ways, she’ll do anything to try and stay away from him until Gage finally gets her to slip up and give in. She agrees on a casual fling with Gage, but soon they’ll both see how the fling will blur into something they can’t control and when it’s finally time for Eliza to go and accomplish her own dreams, she’ll know there’s more she took from Gage than she ever thought possible.

Characters- Characters were good, but I felt that Montana was written better than Gage.

Hmmm... I liked this book, but I can't say I LOVED this book.  Don't get me wrong, it was good and I will read the second book to see where Eliza & Gage's story goes, but there was something lacking in the story for me.

I'm going to just tell you right now what I did like before I tell you what I didn't.  I did like that Eliza was real. She didn't lead Gage on or tell lies.  She tries to keep a good head on her shoulders when getting involved with a promiscuous rock star, but in all honesty, she had no chance when the heart gets involved and the writer did a good job with that transition of Eliza putting up a wall and breaking it down.  She was a strong character.  When it came to Gage, I loved how sexy he was and how he pursued Eliza and was flat out honest with her that he wanted to get with her.  His dedication to Eliza was admirable and I loved that he would tell her that their time was a priority than his time with the band since she would be leaving after two months.  I fell a little in love with him then.  Any guy who can make the most of limited time with his girl has my vote.  I also loved that after Gage and Eliza agree to be more than friends Eliza wouldn't just sit by and get walked over.  If something Gage did bothered her, she let him know it.  She was definitely not a doormat, which made me love her more.

Anyway, We start with Eliza going on tour with her gay dad who manages the band Fire Nine.  This is a big deal to Eliza since she is a bit of an introvert.  She is very shut off from relationships due to a tainted childhood with her mom who let her boyfriend abuse Eliza physically, not sexually.

Now to what I didn't like...

Eliza meets the band and has an attraction to the lead singer, Gage.  She has apparently liked him since high school and this is just torture to her to be in the same proximity as him due to her fear of relationships and knowing his whoring ways.  There is chemistry between them but they are very juvenile with each other by using other people to make each other jealous and what not.

 Speaking of using people, Eliza uses Montana to make Gage jealous, but I tell you what, Montana won me over. I ended up liking him SO much more than Gage.  Montana's character was written with more personality and was just damn sexy.  He has a great sense of humor, is honest, and sweet.  Whereas Gage is stand offish, moody, and frustrating.  There are times where Gage gets really tense and pretty much has to give himself a pep talk in order to get intimate with Eliza and this just made me lose the connection with their relationship too.  I understand that he has trouble letting people in but this is too much and he never explained what he was thinking during these episodes. I would feel offended and a little insecure if I were Eliza and saw my man going at war with himself in the mirror before settling on finally coming to be with me.

Another gripe was that Gage insisted that he had to keep Penelope close because she knew too much and it could ruin his career. Um.... what she knew was not that BIG of a deal.  I feel as though the author could have come up with a better secret that Penelope had to hold over him. I mean, a sex tape with something horrid going on would be something to want to keep secret in order to not ruin the band, but Penelope's knowledge was so minor it bordered on ridiculous to me. Sorry. 

The last gripe is that when Eliza and Gage finally do open up to each other, it's just kind of verbally vomited and it's done.  I didn't feel the intensity or the compassion between them.  Sure he offered to kick the step dad's ass, but maybe a sex scene where he worships her body and eludes to taking the pain away that her step father caused or her worshipping his body and kissing the life saving scar to just add that extra feeling to the situation (this scene suggestion may not be perfect, but hey, I'm not a writer and I do appreciate the art and craft behind it. I'm just being honest with this review).  Instead, they spill their guts, hug, kiss, or fall asleep in  each others arms.  I mean, after Eliza opens up, Gage says, "Wow... that was... a lot to take in. I'm sorry that happened to you.  If you want, we can find him and I can beat his ass for you." And that's it, they go on to talking about other issues.  I don't know, maybe I'm picky but there was just something missing.  But like I said, it was a good book with lots of holes.  It could have been much better but I repeat, I will definitely read the second book :)

Did I mention Montana!! LOL!! Now he is amazing!!

Crud!! One more thing, which I hope will be cleared up or expanded upon: WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH ROY?!! I'm I the only one who is curious about this handsome, moody, silent guy?? Please let there be answers in the next book!!

4.5 sexy stars!

Characters- Characters were really great especially for this sexy, rock star romance!

Plot/Storyline- Pretty good storyline...Loved Eliza, Gage and the band mates.

Steam Factor- WOWZA!....Mrs. Williams is not afraid to put it out on the table ;)

Cover- Cover really portrays the book and connection between Eliza and Gage. Plus, its blue and black ( Gage's favorite colors) hehehehe

Overall- Great Rock n Roll romance. Definitely recommend and will be reading book 2!



*I will say I am not surprised how much I liked this book because I loved the Hard to Resist series by Mrs. S. Q. Williams. She is just a great writer. She makes all her characters funny, sexy and definitely realistic*


*I liked how this story begins with a little back history about Eliza and her past. It sets the tone for her character and why she is the way she is. I liked how head strong Eliza is about life. She is very determined to make something of herself no matter what lengths she must go to do that. She wants to prove everyone wrong, especially her mother. Thankfully, her father Ben, has been very supportive. Ben is the manager of a band FireNine and Eliza decides to go on tour with him for the summer to prepare for College in the Fall and to pursue her passion for drawing and painting. Little does she know, this tour will change her life*

               
                  *FireNine is HOT!!! I said it....H.O.T.
The members of the band are sexy, raunchy, crude asses but you can't help but love them! I love how they rock out and connect to their fans at their concerts. Gage, the lead singer, is the main focus of this book. I love how we still learn about the other band members and a little into their dark pasts so we can be setup for future books about them.


*Gage is.....ahhhhh....Soo incredibly sexy. He has the total bad boy, rocker package that all of us girls swoon over when reading. Underneath all that bad-assness though, he has a sweet side and a huge heart. You will learn a-lot about Gage and why he is the way he is. He has been through a lot as a kid and holds a lot of hate and resentment.*

*Gage and Eliza's relationship starts immediately. Their is a definite attraction between them even though they both are in denial about it. Eliza knows she can't get involved with a rocker nonetheless and is somewhat disgusted by Gage and his antics with all his "women". But of course, they become "friends" and things get heated from there.*


*This book has also a lot of underlying stories running through it about the other band members and even the manger Ben, who happens to be Eliza's dad. Montana actually stuck with me. He was hilarious! I can't wait to hear his story. It was also nice to see Deed's transformation from the beginning to end of the book. Roy is a quiet, storm waiting to erupt. I just know he is going to have some crazy stuff going on*


*I will say I hated how Gage let Penelope get in the way of his and Eliza's relationship. Eliza uses Cal as a buffer though for when Gage gets with Penelope in front of her. It actually makes it funny because they use jealousy as a way to get each other's attention. They are so stubborn!! LOL....The sex was O-Mazing and schmexy!...Their chemistry is undeniable and Shanora Williams brings it in this book. The writing is so descriptive you can feel the hottness*


* By the end of the book, I was so connected with Gage and Eliza and I was just HOPING that they would work things out, but instead your left wanting more and needing to know what's going to happen!! The ending was actually rather emotional. Both Eliza and Gage had confessed a lot about their past and really fell in love with each other over a short period of time. They started to open up and trust each other. Then BAM! book ends....bOOOOOOO..... Good thing is book 2 comes out tomorrow =) YAY! Happy Girl Dance!! Overall, this was a great Rockstar Romance and I loved Eliza and Gage's story. I can't wait to read more! Please go read this book!*

Chapter 2 Sneak Peek (Charlie's POV)

 

He’s just standing there, boring holes into my face.

 

Given I’ve never laid eyes on him before, I don’t know what his normal complexion looks like but I’ll bet it’s not the sickly white pallor that I see now.

 

Like he’s seen a ghost.

 

I try to catch Ginger’s eye, to see if she thinks his reaction is strange, but I can’t.

 

“Sorry…I knocked but you didn’t answer,” she offers in apology. It’s true, she did knock and we waited for close to a minute before entering. I don’t know what he was doing in his office—behind the closed door with a sign that reads “boss man” and pair of lacy underwear pinned to it—but, by the stunned look on his face, we’ve interrupted something. A glance down confirms that his belt is at least buckled.

 

“This is my friend, Charlie, who I told you about.” Ginger’s long, slender fingers point to me and I force a bright smile. “Friend” sounds a bit misleading, seeing as everything I’ve ever told Ginger about me is a deliberate lie.

 

I only met her three weeks ago. Her beginner pole dancing class was just finishing up and she stayed on to watch the advanced class. I guess I impressed her because she sat through the entire hour and then talked my ear off in the change room after about how good I am. I took her proffered number with no intentions to call. The next week, Ginger cornered me after class and wouldn’t leave until I went out to lunch with her. Last week, she coerced me into shopping. There’s nothing wrong with her. I’d say she’s in her mid to late twenties, so quite a bit older than me. She has an easy, genuine laugh and a sarcastic sense of humor. She’s persistent, too. I just didn’t plan on getting to know people, seeing as I won’t be in Miami long.  But I guess you could say that we’ve become friends—lies and all.

 

It’s ironic that we met when we did, actually. By my pole-dancing skills and looks, Ginger automatically assumed I was a stripper. There was no judgement in those bright green eyes when she asked which club I worked at. That’s why I admitted to the few unappealing adult clubs I had applied to and the appalling “interview” at one called Sin City. The one I had run out of. Her pixie-like face lit up, which was not the reaction I was expecting. Then she explained that she bartended at the well-revered Penny’s Palace and offered to get me a job. She asked about my experience and I, of course, lied. I told her that I had worked in Vegas.

 

I haven’t been back to Vegas since I was six. I have certainly never stripped there.

 

After my experience with Sin City, I wasn’t sure if I could go through with it. But Ginger promised me that the owner, Cain, is like none other. The way she talks about him, I’d think he holds some sort of ‘boss of the millennium’ award.

 

But he’s still staring me down.

 

He hasn’t blinked, once.

 

I catch the almost indiscernible shake of his head before he offers in a clipped tone, “Charlie. Right. Hi.”

 

“Hi.” I was cool and confident coming in here, leveraging countless hours of acting classes to ready my wide, friendly smile. Now though, under this man’s steely gaze, I hear the wobble with that one tiny word. I step forward and hold my hand out.

 

His coffee-colored eyes finally pry themselves from my face to glare down at my hand—without moving—and I fight the urge to retract it. Ginger swore that this guy was first class but… he still makes his money off the sex trade. A lot of things get shaken under this roof and hands are probably not one of them. I never did shake the hand of that slime ball at Sin City—Rick— before he instructed me to climb onto his lap two minutes into my interview. I shouldn’t be surprised by this guy’s reaction.

 

These owners are all the same.

 

I take a breath, reminding myself that I’ve handled my fair share of degenerates and can do this.

Hell, I’m a degenerate.

 

As if snapping out of a daze, Cain finally accepts my hand in his, his coffee-colored eyes locked on mine. “Hi Charlie. I’m sorry. You just…startled me. You look a lot like someone I know.” There’s a pause. “Like someone I knew,” he corrects himself softly. His voice carries with it a smooth, educated sound, which surprises me, given our surroundings.

 

“Okay, well, I’ll just be at the bar, getting things set up.” Ginger scoots out of the office, closing the door behind her, leaving me alone with this man. I take a few calming breaths. I’m going to throttle her.

 

I don’t know what to expect now. Ginger didn’t tell me much about Cain, other than that he’s really nice and honest, he treats his employees very well, and if I’m going to dance in Miami, then Penny’s is the place to work. She did say that he sometimes comes off as intimidating but he’s just reserved. And he’s got a lot on his plate, running this place.

 

She certainly left out details about his physical appearance, I realize, as my gaze skates over his frame to see the well-defined curves beneath a fitted button down black dress shirt and black dress pants. As if that body isn’t enough, his face is flawless—angular cheekbones and a sharp jaw combine to give him a masculine yet almost pretty look. He’s like a sculpture—and about as opposite to Sin City Rick as you can get.

 

Basically, Cain is panty-dropping hot.

 

That your boss is panty-dropping hot is an odd thing to leave out of the equation. Cain’s the type of guy that makes you lose your words and your train of thought when he walks by. Except Ginger, it would seem.

 

But attractive or not, I’m feeling all kinds of uncomfortable right now, as Cain’s hard, intelligent eyes slowly roll over my body, appraising me. Taking a deep breath, I pull my shoulders back. I hold my chin up. I look him straight in the eye. I do all the things I know to do to appear confident. I will not cower under the intense scrutiny. If I’m going to be up on his stage, taking my clothes off for his customers, I can’t be unnerved by this.

 

And so I stand and let him pass silent judgment while I survey his office, taking in all the shelves, crammed with boxes. Aside from the large desk on one end and a black leather couch tucked into a corner, it seems like a storage room. Looking at him, I’d expect something sleek and tidy.

 

“Ginger said you have experience?” His tone is more gentle than it was when we first stepped in.

 

I answer without hesitation. “Yes, one year in Vegas. At The Playhouse.”  I fight the urge to start twirling one of my loose blond curls. I know my tells and that’s one that says I’m lying. Ginger warned me, under no circumstances, to lie to Cain Ford, because he always finds out anyway and it pisses him off when he does. It’s kind of impossible to heed that warning though, given my situation.

Plus, I am a very proficient liar.

 

And I’m banking on him not doing an in-depth reference check. Short of divine intervention, he won’t find a Charlie Rourke that worked at The Playhouse in Vegas.

 

Because Charlie Rourke doesn’t exist.
