Review: Black Box by Cassia Leo

Synopsis:

A stand-alone novel about a girl, a boy, and fate.

♥️ Three fateful encounters....
♥️ Two heart-breaking tragedies....
♥️ One last chance to get it right.

From New York Times best selling author Cassia Leo, comes an epic love story about rewriting destiny.

Over the course of five years, Mikki and Crush cross paths on two separate occasions. Their first encounter changes Mikki’s life forever, but their second meeting leaves them both buried beneath the emotional wreckage of a violent attack. Mikki is left with more questions and grief than she can handle, while Crush is forced to forget the girl who saved his life.

Now nineteen years old, Mikki Gladstone has decided she’s tired of the mind-numbing meds. She books a flight to Los Angeles to end her life far away from her loving, though often distant, family.

Twenty-one-year-old Crush has always channeled his blackest thoughts into his music, but he’s never had great aspirations. He decides to fly to Los Angeles to record a demo of the only song he’s never performed in public; a song he wrote for a girl he doesn't even know: Black Box. He has no expectations of fame and he’s never felt like his life had any purpose… until he meets Mikki in Terminal B.

When Mikki and Crush cross paths for the third time in Terminal B, neither has any idea who the other person is; until they slowly piece together their history and realize that fate has more in store for them than just another love story.

Nicky's Review

3.5 Stars

Characters- I freaking LOVED Crush!! Mikki, she was someone to get used to with her many issues and sadness.
Plot/Storyline- This story is so dark and sad but flows really well and keeps a great pace. I enjoyed watching their multi-layered story unfold and keeping the faith that, "Spoiler Alert: Everything is going to be ok." ;)

Steam Factor- Well, there isn't much steam, but the steam that does ensue between Crush and Mikki was heart wrenching at times but beautiful all it's own.
Cover- Simple and sweet but the airplane holds such relevance in this story.
Cliffhanger- No cliffhanger, but I really would have loved more of their story. I turned the last page and couldn't believe it was over. The ending just happened when it felt like it wasn't a complete thought or scene.
Overall- I really enjoyed this read, but I will say that is was heart wrenching, sad and sometimes a bit depressing. The quiet strength of the characters was amazing and I will forever hold these characters in my heart. I was torn apart for Mikki and was so happy with Crush. He was the perfect 3/4 to Mikki because really, she wasn't even 1/2 of a person when they met. Crush truly completed them and helped Mikki heal. He is an amazing character.

So, this is the story of Mikki and Crush. They are two lost souls with many issues of their own and try and cope with these issues the best way they can, but not really successfully. That is until they find each other and learn to heal through facing their problems, confiding in each other, and facing the once scary world together.

Mikki is the epitome of screwed up characters. I felt really bad for her. I literally thought, "Cassia, girl, what more can you put this girl through? Hasn't she had enough?" Mikki has a horrible traumatic experience, which is not recommended for the faint of heart, and on top of that she already had to bear the burden of having a mental illness. This sets her up to spiral out of control when trying to deal with what happened to her.

Mikki plans a trip to L.A. to get away and find her happiness, and that is when and where she meets Crush. They are both scheduled on the same flight but it gets cancelled. Due to Mikki not wanting to go home, she and Crush hang out and they end up getting a  (two separate rooms guys) hotel room together while waiting out the storm so they can catch their rescheduled flight.

During this time you get to watch them get to know each other (the good and the bad) and you finally discover their secrets. We also discover what the Black Box is.  The journey we get to go through with these characters is a freaking steep hill of ups and downs (more downs than ups for a while) and then finally landing on semi-solid ground because I don't believe life will ever be perfect for these two, but, "Spoiler Alert. Everything is going to be ok." The ending had me a bit lost and wanting for more but I believe this is a standalone. The ending just sort of fizzled out but the story was good and well written.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading an angst filled book with lots of psychological issues and topics that aren't for the faint of heart. It's not a book for everyone, but it is a really well written book about suffering and healing. Great job, Cassia Leo, on writing a book that twisted my heart and made me feel like there is hope for everyone, even the hopeless. XO

Favorite Quotes:

"A consequence of losing someone close to you is that you also lose a piece of yourself. And you never really know when it's safe to give away another piece."

"Don't worry, son, not all stories have happy endings; but that doesn't mean they're not worth the read."

"Fear is crippling. Fear of the future can convince us that there is no way out and nothing is ever going to get better. Fear is blinding; it can make us miss the warning signs flashing right in front of our eyes. It can also make you miss those brilliant flashes of color, when the world isn't so gray. But, if you think about it, being afraid isn't such a bad thing. Because fear is a reminder that you still have something to lose. Something worth holding onto."

"Do you believe in fate?"
"No."
"Neither do I. Do you believe in luck?"
"Yes."
"What's the difference?" His gaze is intense as he awaits my answer.
"I don't know. You're the one with the lucky penny. You tell me. What's the difference between fate and luck?"
He smiles and turns his attention back to the view of the city. "Fate is for fairy tales. It's a romantic notion. Luck is what happens when you're in the right place at the right time... with the right person."

"Fate. I used to think that fate was for religious nuts and people who were too afraid to take their fate into their own hands. Now I know the truth. Fate is death. No one escapes it. But if you stick around long enough, you might find someone to help you cheat fate for a while. And when you can't cheat anymore, and fate finally catches up to you, maybe it won't seem so scary with that someone by your side."
