Review: Never Have I Ever by August Clearwing

Synopsis:

Astrophysicist-in-training Piper Minogue has a lot of control over her day-to-day life. Between completing a Master’s degree at Caltech and beginning her fruitful career at a local observatory she has little time for socializing.
Until she attends one specific party that is.
There, Piper is introduced to a drinking game called Never Have I Ever, and she finds herself admitting to a secret fantasy which challenges her friends’ views of her otherwise prudish nature. Her confession piques the interest of one man in particular, Noah; a handsome stranger with a darkly boyish charm.
The resulting spiral of rapture and torture that follows is threatened by the demons of both their pasts. Piper's inability to give her heart to anyone, and Noah's guilt over the death of his former lover claw to the surface to tear Piper away from not only the one man who has ever made her feel like she does not have to be in control of her desires, but also the newly collected list of Nevers they both want to turn into reality.

*Contains strong BDSM themes*

Nicky's Review

4 Stars

Characters- The characters were so multidimensional and twisted in many ways. Very unique and interesting.
Plot/Storyline- The story was freaking unexpected. So many weird moments and uncomfortable situations, but the plot was so well written and tied together really well.

Steam Factor- Ummm... BDSM to the MAX, so yeah, pretty damn HOT!
Cover- Disturbing but appropriate.
Cliffhanger- No cliffhanger, this is a standalone novel.
Overall- Though this was a dark and twisted read, I really enjoyed the crazy ride and the flowing plot. It kept me interested, invested, and wanting to find out what was going to happen next.

I really enjoyed this book. It was full on BDSM and the relationship was not vanilla at all. I especially liked the main characters, Piper and Noah. Piper is an extremely intelligent girl who is very introverted but is able to embrace her inner vixen after she meets Noah. Oh, Noah! He is the perfect mix of sweet, Alpha, commanding, and pure sex and he is super intelligent himself. He dubs himself a computer geek, but he definitely doesn't look or act like one. They balance each other out perfectly and take turns helping each other heal and be strong. They were definitely made for each other.

The story starts with Piper exposing her deep secret of wanting to be dominated sexually during a drunken game of Never Have I Ever during a party one night. Lets just say that Noah was present at the party and takes her up on her challenge in many ways and it's was an uncomfortable first interaction for myself personally. But as they explore each other's personalities, needs, limits, and commonalities; they begin to find hope in each other for more than a one night stand or casual sex situation.

About 75% of the book is exploring Piper and Noah's relationship and discovering dark secrets in Noah's past that come to a head and tilt their world on it's axis. Hell, it pretty much flips their world upside down. There is a very disturbing scene of sexual abuse that you should be aware of. It is very violent and very disturbing so if you can not read about rape, then this is not the book for you. I personally don't like these scenes but I also know that these are situations that do happen in life and I forged on in order to see where the story would go from there.

This book totally messed with my head and may have scarred me for life but it will stay with me for a long time to come. The sex was hot, but I really liked that there were moments (VERY few) of intimacy and gentleness between Piper and Noah. I really appreciated this because I need that connection between characters in order to connect with their feelings for each other and I appreciate the author's attention to detail on this matter. Piper and Noah's relationship is super BDSM, but you definitely come away knowing that what they feel for each other is more than lust.

Thank you August for freaking messing with my mind and taking me places I would NEVER dare venture. I started reading this without knowing what it was about and was pleasantly (and disturbingly) surprised. Thank you for keeping me entertained and for writing a story that is very unique, raw, twisted, dirty, and imperfect. XOXO

Favorite Quotes:

“Wounds heal. Scars fade. Awful memories can be overwritten with better ones if given the chance. The little imperfections of our psyches become overshadowed by the people whose love we cherish because they cherish us despite our faults; physical, emotional, spiritual, or otherwise. This thing we call the human condition with all its bittersweet blind corners and senseless humor evolves from within ourselves and not because of some preordained reverie we desire to cast in the constellations. All in all it is what makes life worth living.”

“There is so much in this world to love... You can only really appreciate it in its entirety when you fully understand why you love it, when you unlock and translate its secrets for what they are, and grip them so close to your soul it hurts.”

“It's easy to romanticize the people in our lives that mean something to us. We elevate them onto a higher plane that the rest of humanity. They appear glorious and pristine and full of wonders of the Universe all wrapped up into one person-sized box waiting to be unpacked. It's easy to forget, when they appear perfect in every way and in every facet of their lives with every action they take, in the end they are still human. And we duly forget being human comes with an inherent composition of flaws in our genetic and mental make-up.”

“Sex without love is nothing more than a complex form of masturbation.”

“When a party in a relationship becomes satisfied with what they have, knowing they can have it whenever they desire, then they take the whole for granted. They fail to desire any more from their partner and the relationship stagnates. Adventure becomes meaningless. Resentment takes the place of excitement. The mystery they fell in love with has been unraveled and holds no more excitement because they is nothing left to discover.”
